How to fix a vibrator – The sex toy tricks you need to know

HELP! My vibrator’s not working! How to fix your vibrator

When it comes to sex toys, one of the most upsetting stories you’ll ever hear is: “I was just about to use it, only to find it’s broken!” There’s nothing more frustrating than getting in the mood and then being denied pleasure because your Battery Operated Boyfriend (aka BOB) has left you high and dry. In other words: my vibrator won’t work.

BUT WAIT! Don’t toss BOB in the bin straight away. He might not be beyond repair.

When you’ve been working in the sex toy business as long as we have, you come to learn that sometimes vibrators can be crafty buggers. Luckily, we have some insider secrets that you should know about and try before cursing loudly at BOB, packing it up and returning it.

Vibrators. Can we fix them? Yes we can!

While we can’t promise that we can fix every battery operated vibrator that breaks, here are some neat tips and tricks you should try before writing your beloved vibrator off completely…

Fix your vibrator - hold downt he power button

Hold down the power/plus button for 2-5 seconds to turn on or off.

Press and hold

This is a really common problem with vibrating sex toys and leads many to think their vibrator is totally broken. While some turn on with a single press of the power button, others require you to press and hold the ‘on’ control for three to five seconds. Why some of these sex toys don’t note that on the packaging, or in the instructions, is beyond us, but if you find you vibe won’t switch on with a single push, try this trick to see if it will start buzzing.

The same technique can be applied when you want to turn it off. It’s frustrating when all you want to do is revel in your orgasmic bliss, but instead you find yourself trying manically to turn the blasted thing off. Mood. Killer.

Again, if it doesn’t work with a single push, then hold the power, or minus, button for a few seconds longer to switch off. Failing that, rip out the batteries.

Remove the protective paper

Some sex toys, like bullet vibrators and cock rings with those little watch style cells, come with the batteries already included. To stop the batteries from running down while the sex toy sits on the store shelf, waiting for someone to buy it, the manufacturers often put a small tab of plastic or paper between the battery and the connection point.

Before using the sex toy for the first time, unscrew the battery compartment and check to see whether there’s a protective tab in the way. Remove it if there is and then your sex toy should work just fine.

Which way round do the batteries go?

Instructions on which way round to insert the batteries can usually be found on the packaging, in the instruction manual, or on the lip of the screw cap to the battery compartment. Handy.

Fix your vibrator - insert the batteries correctly

Vibrators will often include a small image to indicate which way round the batteries need to be inserted.

Give it a tight screwing!

Once you’ve checked the batteries are in the right way round and if it’s still not turning on, make sure the battery cap/base is screwed on tight enough to maintain the connection. If it’s on wonky, or too loose then this could cause it to buzz temporarily or erratically. Level it up and close it again. Check around the base of the vibrator and see if there are any markers that need lining up between the toy and the cap.

Got enough power?

Check that you’ve put the correct number of batteries into your toy. While we detail how many batteries each vibrator needs on the ‘Details & Care’ section of each product, it’s always worth completely removing the battery compartment so you can clearly see how many batteries you need. It might look like you can only fit two in there, when really the sex toy needs three, four or even six batteries to get it going.

The batteries always die

Some of the larger battery powered vibrators will chew through your AA or AAA’s within a few uses. This isn’t because the toy is faulty, it just requires a lot of juice for all that rotating and buzzing.

If this sounds familiar and you’re sick of having to buy and replace the batteries each time you want to use your favourite vibe, then take the batteries out after you’ve finished using it. Bit of a pain, but at least you’ll know you’ll be running on full power when you next come to use your sex toy.

My vibrator doesnt always work and sometimes it goes off by itself at random times… what gives??

    • Hey Hannah, thanks for getting in touch. Depending on what vibrator it is, it could be down to a faulty connection between the button and battery. If it’s remote controlled, then it could be that the remote needs new batteries, or maybe if it goes off at random times, it could be that when you then come to use it, there’s no charge/power left. Either way, this situation doesn’t sound ideal.

Email me rose@harmonyuk.com with the name and make of your vibrator and I’ll see what extra info I can dig up from my brain on how to fix it!

  2. Scarlet

I literally just bought a vibrator, and it won’t work at all? I’ve tried different batteries, cleaning the connector, and a bunch else, it just refuses to cooperate and I’m worried I bought a faulty vibrator from a place I can’t return it to (even though it’s unused). Any idea of what I could do?

    • Hi Scarlet, thanks for getting in touch and sorry to hear your vibe isn’t working as it should. Are you able to send me a link to the model of vibe you’re struggling with? This could give me some extra clues on what you could try.

Having said that, it sounds like you’ve attempted all the obvious tips. If it’s a faulty connection between the buttons and the toy then there’s little chance of fixing that yourself. If you’re really unable to return it to the store you bought it from, you could try contacting the manufacturer directly. If you have a receipt with the date of the sale, they may be surprised to hear that one of their products has gone faulty so soon after purchase, so could provide you with a replacement.

      Best of luck with it!

So my batteries died and i finally decided to huy new batteries. Upon inserting them…. my vibrator lights up… but refusrs to turn off or even vibrate. .. HELP!

    • Hi Anne, Yep it’s always a good idea to keep a supply of fresh batteries close to hand! Even when the sex toy is not in use, some of them still manage to run the power down in them, so it’s a good idea to take the batteries out if you know you’re not going to be using it for a while.

Regarding it lighting up, but not vibrating, I’d check that the connector and battery compartment is free from rust or dust. If the same batteries have been in your vibe for a long time they could have damage the battery area, so check thoroughly.

      • Irena

I am having the same problem I checked for rust or dust and there isn’t any. I just got it maybe a couple weeks ago. It only lights up but doesn’t vibrate. I bought the iped egg 8

        • Hi Irena,
Hmm, sounds like it might be faulty. Have you tried contacting the store you bought it from to request an exchange? You should get them to test it for you to make sure it vibrates properly before leaving the store.
Best of luck with it! Rose.

          • Megan Putter

I just bought the Fifty shades of Grey bullet vibrator and upon opening it I found dried battery acid inside where the battery connects. I’ve tried cleaning it and everything. What can I do?

  4. Megan

I just bought a vibrator from Spencer’s and it won’t work! I put the batteries in every way possible and it still won’t work.. Any thoughts?

    • Hi Megan, Firstly, check the battery compartment to make sure there isn’t any additional protective paper in there that could be disrupting the connection. Also, check the connector. Whether it’s spring based or the little metal clip, it might need pulling out a bit further so it makes suitable contact with the battery. Finally, ensure the cap is screwed on correctly (it should be level) and tightly.

If it still doesn’t work after all that, I’d say you have a faulty vibrator. We offer a 30 day no quibble returns policy if an item is faulty. You should check the retailer’s returns policy to see if they offer the same.

      Best of luck with it!

  5. Dana

Help! I was in the middle of using my vibrator, when it suddenly stopped working. I figured the batteries were dead, but I replaced them and there’s still no difference! How do I fix it?

    • Hey Dana, Oh no! That is the worst time for a vibe to stop working! We’re they fresh batteries from a brand new pack? Also, were the batteries in date? Sounds weird I know, but batteries do have a shelf life so is always worth checking that the new pack you’ve had stashed in your cupboard are still in date. Failing all that, I’d need more detail on the model of your vibe to suggest other things you could try.
      Cheers!
      Rose

  6. MIMI

    Hi,
my thruster vibrator only partially works mow, it vibrates but doesnt thrust anymore and the beads on the shaft domt move around anymore

    • Hi Mimi,
Thrusting rabbits often require a lot of power, so the batteries will run down very quickly. Replace the batteries in the first instance. If it’s a mechanism though that’s come loose or faulty within the rabbit, then you’ll have little chance of repairing it manually without taking the toy to bits. Good luck with it! Rose

  7. Ricki

I bought a Xinlv vibrator which has a clitoris tickler thing on it…well it’s pink and rechargable…..I went to charge it up for the first time today as it died…and wont switch on. When I plug the cord in the light turns red and after about 2 mins it goes blue. Anyway so I have tied charging it for many time frame aka 30 min….wont turn on….2 hrs…4.hrs….8.hrs even 24….over 3 days of trying to charge it, it still won’t switch on and the brand has no web site…what do I do?

    • Hi Ricki,
Sounds like you’re having a nightmare of a time with this particular vibe. Am not 100% sure which model of Xinlv vibrator you have, but having Googled around (it’s not a brand we stock) it looks like most of their rechargeable toys are USB rechargeable. Have you tried a different USB port in case that’s faulty? If could be that the cable itself is defective, in which case you may need to request a replacement. Try going back to the retailer that you purchased it from to see if they can help or even offer you an exchange. Alternatively, after doing some digging, could this be the manufacturer’s website?

Generally, we advise customers with rechargeable sex toys to give them a charge before use, just to make sure the power is full and there is no fault with any of the equipment. Much like you would with a new mobile phone when you first get it.
Best of luck with finding a solution and hope this has gone some way to help.

  8. Grace

    Hi,
My vibrator is suppose to have 7 different settings but when I replaced the batteries it will only do one setting and if I screw it all the way closed it wont turn on at all! Please help!

    • Hi Grace, this sounds very odd, if you’re vibe is meant to have 7 settings but is only allowing one. Have you tried a different set of new batteries? If they were older batteries or have been used in something else then it could be that they’ve not got enough power to get all 7 speeds working.

Try a fresh set of batteries and if it’s still not working, I’d advice contacting the retailer or manufacturer that the product could be faulty.

    HI ladies,
Recently my 5 speed battery operated vibrator which runs on 2 x AA batteries just completely stopped working. It was heartbreaking at the time and one day I decided I was going to get it to work.
Instead of putting my batteries in the way it was instructed I flipped them to opposite way and it started working. I couldn’t change the speed but hey any vibration is better than none.

  10. Meow

Hi, a couple months ago my vibrator stopped rotating- i can still turn that setting on from time to time, but after ~30 seconds it dies again and doest turn on for a while again. And now the vibration setting is getting faulty as well- it started randomly dying if i leave it on for a while, so now my “routine” became turn it on > wait till it dies > wait a bit (it doesn’t turn on immediately) > turn it on again > repeat, which is frustrating to say the least. it is ~5 months old, and i have no idea what brand is it. is there anything that can be done, or is it done for?

Hi! My Lelo Mia (usb chargable lipstick type) does not charge. It has been lying in my drawer for 2-3 year now( yes, i know!!!) and when i finally decided to charge it i saw it is kind of dead.
I have tried all tricks, it does not light when plugged in usb socket in my laptop, it doesn’t start if i press – and+ at the same time…
    Any hopes for it?
    Thanks!
    Anna.

My We vibe Tango suddenly stopped working, it won’t charge, I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I have had it for about a year and a half now and i have never had problems with it before.

    Hi,
I recently bought a vibrator and all was well until I tried to turn it off. The light switches off, supposedly indicating that the device has powered down, yet the thing keeps vibrating! It is also a USB rechargeable one so I cannot simply remove the batteries… please help!

Help! I was in the middle of using my vibrator, when it suddenly stopped working. I figured the batteries were dead, but I replaced them and there’s still no difference! How do I fix it? It’s a evolved citron vibrator.

  16. Haley

I got a sexology tropical flower vibrator from spencers and it already doesn’t work. There were no instructions with it, there is no on button, and the dial broke off. I assumed you would unscrew the top part to put the batteries in, nothing said otherwise. I found this little white cap and I thought if you popped it off, then u put the batteries in. Well I ended up snapping the thing and now the dial won’t stay on. It doesn’t turn on either. Help?

    • Hi Haley,

Is your vibrator still under warranty? You may find you can get a replacement.

      Thanks

      Harmony Store

    • Deenah

I have the same vibe from Spencers. When I turn the dial for a different speed it will shut off,go slower,go too fast. The dial doesn’t do it’s job. I want to return it however, going into spencers and complaining that my Vibrator is not working is rather embarrassing to say the least. How depressing

  17. TJ

Briilliant! It usually works with a quick push of the on/off button but lately it seemed like it had a short. I followed advice and held down the button for a few seconds and on it came. Relief! Thank you!

Hi, I have a large “Pure Silver Aluminum” vibrator. I went to turn it on and it didn’t work, I switched up the way the batteries go in, tried new batteries, switched those ones around, screwed the top on tight, and it didn’t work. Could you help me solve me problem because when I got ready to use it I was disappointed to find out it didn’t turn on. Help please!!!

  28. Lia

hi, my 10 vibration mode toy is not working properly anymore, only way to switch it off is to open the battery compartment. Basically neither the power button, or the settings button is working.

    • Riley

I’ve had the same exact problem as you. I put different batteries in mine and then closed it really tightly. When I turned it on it finally worked. The buttons worked as well, and I could turn it off and on without removing the batteries.

  29. Kitty

I accidentally submerged my waterproof vibrator In water (the heat of the moment) and now it won’t turn on… Help?

  30. Emily

I recently received a 7-speed, waterproof, silicone usb-rechargeable rabbit vibe — the company is Dingye.

It worked alright before it was fully charged, but shortly after reaching full charge, it switched on by itself, and neither the power or the settings button work to turn it off. I think there was a power fluctuation while it was plugged in.

Should I simply wait for the batteries to die and then try again? I emailed the company directly, but have yet to receive a response.

So heres my dilemma.. My gfs vibrater i described below is a usb rechargeable marked on it is a logo u<n in the chrome on it and neither of us can remember where it was purchased to try and fix or replace it.. It worked great for 3 months and now it wont vibrate. It flashes a blinking internal light to indicate its charging but for 3 days now it never stops blinking to indicate its fully charged… And once its unplugged from the charging cord it wont turn on at all. I tried all your tricks here plus silly hacks like putting water damaged electronics in rice kinda thing and nothing so far has worked…if anyone knows the manufacturers who sells this vibrater from the description i gavee below please leave a reply.. Cant even look it up to see what the warranty or website suggests since we cant remember where we bought it from.. Description: its a slendor straight hourglass shape -no bend in it or clit feature, its a pink 6 or 7 speed 8in vibrator with a thin long chrome lines in the shape of a sword or needle looking design going down opposite sides from top to about 3/4 ways down and has a u<n logo imprinted in the chrome on one side. Its usb rechargeable with the usb cord also has the same logo u<n.. And even though its rechargeable the extra battery my gf was told is the replacement… theres no way to replace the battery without tearing it apart.. The batery we have is a 2500mah 35a ultra drain rechargeable battery (imr 18650 3.7v li-mn) sub ohm series from blow, llc/blow.com.

      specs:
      Silicone, latex free, and waterproof
Multi speed 6 or 7 i think: 1st speed soft 2nd harder, 3rd quick pulsating, 4th longer slower pulsating and a couple other speeds i cant remember cause i dont use them lol last setting though is a gradual increase.
.. So frustrated im not even sure if this comment is even necessary but i hate to throw away an 80$ vibrator thats barely been used…

Any info like what company, or brand or manufacture, or website or even suggestions, hacks or tricls even lol would be helpful to try and get it fixed ): …..

I have a rabbit vibrator from Utimi and I’ve gotten a few uses out of it, but now only the clitoral vibration works and the main shaft refuses to vibrate. One of the batteries continuously gets stuck in the spring and I can’t seem to get it to not work (and this does the same thing even if I replace the batteries). Do I have to get a new one?? Help!

  32. Tay

Hi, I recently bought Love Magic wireless iWand mini rechargeable massager. I decided it needed to be charged as the vibration was getting weak. While charging I plugged it out by accident and plugged it back in. Once I plugged it out to pug it away it wouldn’t stop blinking (the light that indicates it is charging). I have no idea why this is happening but it won’t actually turn on but the light is still blinking even as I type this even though it’s plugged out. But when I plug it in to charge it still gets warm as it’s still charging so I have no clue.

  33. Dee

I have an egg vibrator. With the remote that looks like an mp3 player. I changed the batteries for the egg and the remote but it doesn’t work anymore. so sad. Help?

  34. Sarah Cohen

Problem with wireless vibrator bullet. It doesn’t function properly when the flat batteries are placed in the bullet in turns on by itself regardless of the remote. Something is off or wrong. The remote turns on and frequency button works however there is no connection between the remote and the vibrator bullet. I do not know what I’m doing wrong. There was a plastic insert inside the bullet it came out. The bullet with the batteries inside turns on by itself without the remote on.

  35. Gretchen

I made sure the batteries were in right and I made sure that cap thing was on right and I held the power button for 5 seconds and it still won’t light up or even vibrate and I don’t know what to do

Help! My vibrator is a one button operating one. I can’t seem to get it to do much but turn on and off. It vibrates when I push the button but it’s one pulse and then does nothing. It has 6 speeds but nothing happens. It only gives a pulse when I push the button. My boyfriend somehow got it to work when he tried but I can’t figure it out. There isn’t any instructions or other buttons and I haven’t got to use it yet! I’m so frustrated. Please help me lol

  38. I just bought a Calexotic 10 speed shower vibrator yesterday from an adult lingerie store. The cashier tested it to see if it worked and it worked fine. When I got home, I put in the correct batteries (AAA) but I put them in incorrectly. It worked anyway and my toy was vibrating, however not like it was at the store. The button was supposed to light up and there was supposed to be an intense vibration, but that wasn’t happening. I had it vibrating for about one minute while I was reading the manual to put the batteries in the right way, and then all of a sudden it stopped working. I thought maybe it was the batteries, so I went and got new ones, but it still won’t turn on. I smelled the inside of it where the batteries are supposed to be inserted and it has a burnt smell. I’m afraid the engine burned or something. I would really appreciate your help. This is my first vibrator and I paid $50 bucks for it and would hate to have wasted my money.

  39. grace

  41. Daggeira

I have a Fun Factory vibe that doesn’t have removable batteries that spontaneously turned on and will not turn off no matter what I press and hold. For anyone experiencing this exact problem you apparently have to let it die. Also, when you unplug it to see if it still works, it’ll lock in ‘on’ mode again until it dies once more. Just so you know!

  42. Hello, I am so hoping you cam help me. I have the Lelo Ina 2 and it no longer turns on or shows that it is charging. I checked the cord thoroughly to make sure there were no tears or anything and I made sure the outlet was wirking

  43. Hello, I am so hoping you cam help me. I have the Lelo Ina 2 and it no longer turns on or shows that it is charging. I checked the cord thoroughly to make sure there were no tears or anything and I made sure the outlet was working also. I no longer have my proof of purchase so exchanging it through the warranty is out. Can you please give me some ideas as to how I might fix it ? I’d be forever grateful.

  44. Jen

I’m not sure if this is true for all vibrators, but it has been with a couple of mine. I just searched the product name, and there were manuals (PDF files) that could be accessed. For certain reset or batter/charging issues that may be more specific to your particular bob I have found these very helpful.

  45. Anna

OMG THANKS !! YOUR EDVICE HELPED . THE PURE ROMANCE VIBRATOR STOPPED WORKING ABOUT A HALF A YEAR AGO . I DECIDED TO PULL IT OUT & TRY AGAIN , IT DIDN’T WORK I FOUND YOUR WEBSITE HELD IT DOWN FOR 2-5 SECONDS & BOOM IT WORKED THANKS SO MUCH

  51. Jaz

Hi, I have a problem with my vibrator. I accidentally put a 12V battery into mine, when I should have put a 1.5V battery in it. It got really hot, and then stopped vibrating at all. I have since bought the right batteries, and put them in, but it still won’t even vibrate a little. Have a fried the circuits, or can I still rescue it?

  52. Kenzie

My boyfriend jus but me a new vibrator but it won’t work, and I’ve tried everything. Is there anything else I can try?

  53. Touya

Hi, I purchased a vibrating wand for myself about 6 months ago. Nothing seemed to be having any issues or anything. It’s a rechargeable one. Ever since it recently died, I will go to charge it, the light goes on to let me know it’s charging so I’ll put it away and let it charge. Then when I take it back out, it refuses to turn on at all once I take it off the charger. Then when I put it back on the charger, the light blinks as though the battery is completely dead! The weird thing is, if I watch it charge and then take it off after a few minutes, it still turns on. Super weird!! Any ideas??

  54. Teresa

I have a PrettyLove dildo exactly this model ( http://www.lybaile.net/search.php?encode=YToyOntzOjg6ImtleXdvcmRzIjtzOjExOiJCSS0wMTQ0MjAtMSI7czoxODoic2VhcmNoX2VuY29kZV90aW1lIjtpOjE1MTk0NzE0MzI7fQ== ). I bought it at a local sexshop and charged it properly and used it without problems. Then, when I had to recharge it, the problems arrised. It won’t charge on the computer USB port, or on the Playstation, I tried all the phone and iPad chargers and none works. I plug the cable in, it works for 2 seconds and then goes off. I don’t have a clue on how to recharge it. Please, help! Is there a special charger for this type of USB devices. It didn’t come with any charger, so I thought I could charge it anywhere but it probably need a special port.

I have an old Handy Hannah plug-in “massager” from the 1950’s probably. The unit itself works great, but the cord has been damaged. Who could I send it to for repair?

My CalExotics Silhouette S6 Vibrator will not work how it use to anymore. I have tried everything. It will come on but the vibrations will only half work. For example like one minute its vibrating perfectly fine then two minutes later it slows down (by itself) or stop vibrating in general but the power light will still be on. Please help!!! Its only 4 months old.

I just bought a body wand by the body wand company and I was wondering if the red light means it’s battery is low or not and if it’s fully charged it won’t have a blue light when plugged in

I bought my vibrator new on Amazon about 2 months back. This vibrator is a 360 degree rotating head vibrator and has different vibrations. The product did come with instructions, to not use if broken. I don’t have a warranty on it and the amazon return policy is gone. How can i fix my vibrator if it is a Paloqveth and the rotating head won’t work, but the vibrations still do. I checked around to feel if anything wasn’t smooth but it seems fine although I’m not sure, but can this be fixed by hand?

So here is a helpful tip
    My butterfly dildo
The butterfly stopped vibrateing but the dildo still worked i was heart broken my bf just bought it and had only used it maybe 3 times

so i got down to business
I took of the silicone cover off.
Slowly i than found the vibrator had a broken wire ……noooooo…. So i got electric tape and a shaver remove the hard plastic the make the vibrator in side you will find a little metal thing were the wires connect to

I shaved off some plastic from the wires enough to were i could wrap the exposed wire around the connect post two little things sticking up .
Afterwards i took the black electric tape and cover the wire wrapped connect post
    Put it back together
If it dosent work right away try again n again. Because if ur like me i dont own a soldering machine the wire wrapped connect is ur best bet if its used after you put the vibrator together make sure it works use a little more tape to tape down the wires before putting cover back over it …. Use common sense wen working on toys this was my first time fixing or messin with wires im not trained so do at ur own risk

My vibrator will turn on, but it wont vibrate. I don’t know whats going on with it, I’ll hit the on button and the light will turn on but it wont vibrate at all. I’ve tried charging it but that’s not working either. I just can’t figure it out.

Can you help me with mine? I believe it’s the Lelo Key. The charger has two mini buttons that attach to same mini buttons on the vibrator itself. It won’t turn on/or it won’t charge. I can send a picture if that helps! Thank you!

Hello! I have a lipstick vibrator that I REALLY really love and recently the top has popped off! (The “lipstick” part of it)

I was just wondering if there’s anyway I could reattach it so it doesn’t fall off anymore and I can get more use out of it.

I might just buy a replacement from Spencer’s this weekend, but if I could fix it, I will.
